2011 inductees into United States Hockey Hall of Fame announced, Chris Chelios tops list –NHL Update
This year’s inductees into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame were announced on Monday, August 1, which included some of the greatest players to have ever graced the ice, including a well know television sports broadcaster known for his talented abilities.
The list of inductees was announced during a media teleconference by USA hockey, which will be formally inducted during the 39th U.S Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony and dinner, scheduled to be held in Chicago, in the near future.
Former National Hockey League (NHL) defenseman, Chris Chelios led the list, followed by Gary Suter, Keith Tkachuk, Ed Snider and Mike Emrick.
Chris Chelios, a 49-year-old former defender and 40 number pick during the 1981 NHL Entry Draft by Montreal Canadiens, played nearly 27 seasons in the major league with teams like Montreal, Chicago Blackhawks, Detroit Red Wings, and finally, Atlanta Thrashers
during the 2009-2010 season. He became the oldest U.S born player to retire and second oldest in NHL history.
"I wanted to leave the game when I felt like there was nothing left in the tank", Chelios told reporters at his retirement announcement Aug. 31, 2010. "I think I pretty much accomplished that. I have no regrets".
Chelios is current working as the executive advisor to Detroit general manager, Ken Holland.
Keith Tkachuk, also a retiree after the 2009-2010 season, has played over 18 seasons in the major league with teams like Winnipeg Jets, the team which drafted him 19th overall during the 1990 NHL Entry Draft, Phoenix Coyotes, St. Louis Blues and
Atlanta Thrashers.
"He came in raw (in 1991-92) and just evolved into a great player", television analyst, Ed Olczyk said about Tkachuk. "He was the prototypical power forward. He could score. He could hit. He wasn't afraid to run you into the ditch. He was a great pro. He's
one of the greatest American-born players to play the game".
Ed Snider, was also another former player who has made huge contributions for the sport of ice hockey. He is the man who brought hockey to the city of Philadelphia, is currently is the founder and owner of Philadelphia Flyers.
Mike “Don” Emrick becomes the first media member to be inducted into the hockey hall of fame after his recent retirement, after spending over two-decades as the announcer of hockey everywhere.
