2011: the year of gaming three-quel - Part 1
This year 2011 for those readers who have stumbled upon this article at a later date, has been filled with a number of video games which all had one thing in common: the fact, that by some strange coincidence, nearly all of them were the third installments
in their series.
While three or four games with the number ‘3’ at the end of them would have gone unnoticed, the sheer number of three-quels which have been released in 2011 is staggering. Here is a brief look back to the ‘3’s of 2011.
Killzone 3
As it was the third part of a Guerrilla Games premier first person shooter series, there was plenty of hype surrounding the title. It seemed Sony put everything behind the title which included PlayStation Move compatibility, full stereoscopic 3D support,
a special Sharpshooter gun accessory for the game and other features and add-ons as well.
Unlike the majority of three-quels, Killzone 3 did not end the series, but rather left another cliff hanger of an ending which did not just hint at another game in the series, but rather shouted it out loud.
The game itself received positive reviews from critics and gamers seemed to appreciate the more accessible nature of Killzone 3 over its predecessor.
Resistance 3
Another PlayStation 3 exclusive title, Resistance 3 did what Killzone 3 did, but in a slightly better manner. In terms of visuals and graphics, the game took things up a notch.
While comparing the ‘alien planet’ experience of Killzone to the ‘Earth run over by aliens’ experience of Resistance may be unfair, in terms of visuals, the latter just edges out its cousin. The game brought the trilogy, which began as a launch day title,
Resistance: Fall of Man, for the PlayStation 3, and saw two different protagonists and a feeling of desperation no other game could match.
The multiplayer is solid and addictive and the overall production values for the game are superb. Fans and critics both loved the game and it seemed that once Joseph Capelli sets his mind on something, nothing can come in his way.
Gears of War 3
Having just been released, Epic Games’ Xbox 360 exclusive title is well on its way to breaking a few records as the title managed to sell more opening day copies than its previous two installments combined.
Unlike Killzone 3, Gears of War 3 is the final chapter of an emotional, action packed ride which began with the original title over four years ago. With plenty of different options for multiplayer action and an addictive co-op mode, expect Gears of War 3
to live long in the memory of every gamer.
That is unless Microsoft decide to pull a Halo and bring the series back to life for another three parts.
So far, these are all the games which have been released in 2011 and bear the number ‘3’ at the end of their titles. While it may not seem as impressive as the roster promised earlier in the article, there are many, many more titles we have not yet touched.
