2012 American League All Star Selection: Boston Red Sox David Ortiz
David Ortiz is Boston Red Sox lone American League All Star player this year. According to sources, Ortiz is expected to start as a designed hitter for American League team in the upcoming Midsummer Classic.
The 36-year-old is having one of the finest seasons of his career. With Red Sox at 43-43 in the American League East Division, Ortiz will be very pleased with what he has managed to achieve this season.
Right now, he is averaging .312 with 22 home-runs and 57 RBI’s. His On-base Percentage of .406 is amongst the best in the league. In the first week of July, he also became one of the only 49 players to hit 400 career home-runs.
Credit should be given to him for producing match winning performances on a regular basis. In an interview, Ortiz stated that injuries have halted Boston’s progress significantly this year. He further added that Red Sox record before the All Star Break could
have been a lot better, had they not suffered so many injuries.
“In our case, injuries got in the way for us to have the hard time that we’ve been having through the first half of the season,” Ortiz said.
Boston’s designated hitter was surprised at the fact no one else from his team managed to break into the AL All Star team. The veteran is satisfied with his performance in first half of the season and it will be interesting to see if he can continue his
excellent run after the All Star Game to make a name for himself.
“If you don’t have hot guys hitting behind you, they won’t mind to pitch around you and take care of the rest, you know what I’m saying? So this first half was good,” he said. “Like I always do, tried my best. Hopefully the rest of the guys that are on the
DL will be ready for the second half and us to have a better chance.”
Although the Red Sox are nine games behind the league leaders New York Yankees, Ortiz believes his team has a slim chance to make it to the playoffs.
