2012 BWF Superseries Finals: A remarkable outing for Joachim Fischer Nielsen, Christinna Pedersen
There were many laudable performances in 2012 edition of BWF Superseries Finals but the Mixed Doubles partners Joachim Fischer Nielsen and Christinna Pedersen of Denmark stood out by proving themselves the true champions.
The underrated but talented duo registered their presence in the arena with an unbeatable run in this prestigious badminton tournament. They unseated world beaters like Zhang Nan-Zhao Yunlei, Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying and Sudket Prapakamol-Saralee Thoungthongkam
in this game of throne.
World Number six partnership of Joachim and Christinna alarmed all the contestants by overpowering the fourth seeded Chinese team in the opening match. Both Danish campaigners did not show any sign of bewilderment in front of the higher ranked opponents
and locked the honour in a commendable manner.
They kick-started their campaign by claiming first match point with an impressive result of 21-12 and then capitalised this initial advantage to seal straight-set victory. They displayed great fighting spirit in second set of the match and wrapped this showdown
with scoreboard flashing 23-21 margin in their favour.
This timely win proved a real boost for Joachim and Christinna as they never looked back after getting on right track. They locked horns with the Malaysian pair Chan Peng Soon-Goh Liu Ying in the next encounter.
This clash of titans remained in full swing for 41 minutes but finally Joachim-Christinna managed to tip the scale in their favour. They laid foundation of their supremacy by winning first set with 21-16 margin and then served notice of their dominance with
a striking knock of 21-8.
With such an emphatic performance, they powered their way into knock round of this tournament. However, they still had Muhammad Rijal-Debby Susanto to overpower to ensure a favourable draw in the semi-finals.
This Group B match ended in just two games as the twosome of Joachim and Christinna ruled the court throughout this meeting. They pushed their competitors on back foot by clinching first match point and then sent them packing by piling up a decisive total
of 21-16 in second set.
This straight-set victory ensured their presence in the semi-final round where they were scheduled to meet Sudket Prapakamol-Saralee Thoungthongkam of Thailand.
The Danish pair employed all of its valuable experience in the game and secured a title match berth with concluding result of 21-19 and 21-13.
In final round of this Superseries, they forged a fruitful chemistry against Zhang Nan- Zhao Yunlei of China and claimed the Mixed Doubles crown in a commendable manner.
Though, Joachim and Christinna were unseeded players in the BWF Superseries Finals but they proved their point by raising their country’s flag in this tournament. Now they are all set to stretch this winning streak in upcoming international events.
