2012 BWF Superseries Finals: Du Pengyu gains access to main round of Men’s Singles event
China’s spirited shuttler Du Pengyu remained invincible in the group stage of BWF Superseries Finals and powered his way to main draw of Men’s Singles event on Friday, December 14, 2012.
In his last encounter of Group A, he outclassed Boonsak Ponsana of Thailand after an exhausting exercise of three sets.
This hard fought battle took place in local badminton arena of Shenzhen and both contenders entertained the crowd while placing final figures of 24-22, 21-23 and 21-8.
World Number nine Du Pengyu showed commendable craft on court and bagged his third consecutive victory by prevailing in the opening and ending segments.
However, it was not a smooth ride to victory as the talented Thai campaigner challenged him in all areas of the game in first two sets.
Both players made the crowd gasp with a breath-taking performance in the opening game. They made every effort to gain an early advantage but neither of them could make a significant difference until game point situation.
Initially, Boonsak enjoyed a decent lead with 10-5 margin but his supremacy was short-lived as the Chinese shuttler stormed back with a strong reply.
Du Pengyu clinched five points in a row and managed to finish first half of the set with a favourable figure of 11.
The latter part of game also kept swinging between them until the native shuttler placed a tight yet decisive margin of 24-22.
Next game proved real test of their mental and physical fitness as this segment of the showdown remained in full swing all the way to game point situation.
In first half of the set, Du Pengyu was in strong position to seal a straight-set victory but then he frittered away this opportunity after the interval.
Boonsak Ponsana made best out of his rival’s blunders and brought the contest to right balance with a stunning knock of 23-21.
Third set became survival of the fittest war as both shuttlers were looking to claim that final match point.
However, it turned completely a one-sided affair as the Chinese campaigner played impeccable badminton and raised hand as victor after putting 21-8 score on the board.
