2012 BWF Superseries Finals: Kien Keat, Boon Heong excel in Men’s Doubles group stage
Malaysia’s prime Men’s Doubles team Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong showed superb coordination and saved its honour against Mathias Boe-Carsten Mogensen in group stage of BWF Superseries Finals on December 13, 2012.
However, it was not an easy win as they had to wait for 73 minutes to read a favourable result of 21-19, 15-21 and 21-18.
World Number two duo Kien Keat-Boon Heong locked the honour by prevailing in the opening and ending segments of this showdown.
Meanwhile, the Danish team also showed commendable craft on the court but luck was not on its side. Both partners could live their moment of glory only in the second set.
The first set of match started with couple of gruelling rallies as both contenders put all in their possession to gain an early advantage.
They snapped at each other’s heels and remained close on the points table until game point situation.
Initially, the twosome of Mathias and Mogensen performed exceptionally well and established a decent lead but then the Malaysian pair struck hard and tip the scale in its favour.
Kien Keat and Boong Heong bagged many valuable points without any interruption and piled up an indomitable total of 11 before the interval.
After the mid-game break, there was a dramatic change in the score position as the opposing duo showed a transformed character and bounced back into the contest.
Mathias and Mogensen were in commanding position with 19-17 when their challengers clinched four consecutive points and forced them to surrender with 21-19 margin.
However, the story was entirely different in the following game as this time Danish campaigners played with great precision and claimed this crucial match point.
Initially, it was felt that Kien Keat and Boon Heong will relish full benefits of first set win and ruled the court also in this segment but they put a below par performance.
On the other hand, Mathias and Mogensen displayed an elevated craft and turned their competitors’ plan of straight-set victory into dust.
They maintained a notable difference until last shot was played and registered a winning figure of 21-15.
Unexpectedly, they failed to rise in the decider and knelt down after reading 18-21 score on the board.
This was a wrap and Kien Keat-Boon Heong gained a respectable position in Group A of Men’s Doubles event.
