2012 Belgian International: Adam Cwalina, Koen Ridder remain invincible in Men’s Doubles event
Men’s Doubles title of the Yonex Belgian International belonged to the twosome of Adam Cwalina and Koen Ridder as they thrashed Marcus Ellis-Paul Van Rietvelde in the final match on September 16, 2012.
This epic tussle, staged at Leuven in Belgium, lasted for 40 minutes and both contenders kept the audience intact while piling up the final result of 21-18 and 21-17.
Both teams were equal in terms of talent and passion but finally Adam and Koen emerged as champions after sealing a straight-set victory.
However, Marcus and Paul also earned lot of respect for their fighting spirit which they showed in both segments of this showdown.
In the opening game, they were in strong position to pocket first match point but they frittered away this opportunity by putting a below par performance in the crucial moments.
They took a great start and established a decent lead with 7-4 total. They picked the bird early and kept their rivals under control until half time.
Marcus and Paul, who joined hands especially for this International Challenge, showed superb coordination and finished the first half of the set with a respectable score of 11-6.
Later part of the game was filled with a lot of excitement as the suppressed duo Adam-Koen showed strong character in the pressure situation and stole the limelight with a lustrous performance.
At first, they caught the opposing team in the third quarter of the set and then bagged the opening game with a decisive figure of 21-18.
Next game also subjected both contenders to a tough trial as they snapped at each other’s heels all the way to game point situation.
In the first half of the set, a couple of gruelling rallies set the overall mood of the contest and both teams played positive badminton to oust their opponent.
They remained equal until 4-4 but Marcus and Paul made difference with a few successive points and put a notable margin of 11-8 before the interval.
However, their supremacy was short lived as the partnership of Adam and Koen counter-balanced the situation in the end.
They struck hard when it mattered and raised hands as champions with scoreboard flashing 21-17 result in their favour.
