2012 CAVB Men’s African Olympic Qualification Tournament starts today
As per the announced schedule of Confederation African de Volleyball (CAVB), the men’s qualifying tournament for the 2012 London Olympic Games will take centre stage on Tuesday, January 17 in Cameroon.
The five-day competition will be rounded off on January 21, revealing the top contender of the campaign. The Yaoundé Multipurpose Sports Complex (Palais Polyvalent des Sports de Yaoundé) in Cameroon has been selected to facilitate the participants of the
competition.
A total of five men’s beach volleyball tandems from Egypt, hosts Cameroon, Tunisia, Algeria and Ghana will enter the competition, while the eventual winner will earn the ticket to the Summer Olympic in London.
Egypt is the reigning African champion and top contender for the Olympic ticket. Likewise, the runner-up and host Cameroon is also up for the Olympic berth. It is likely that these two teams will battle it out in the final match of the Olympic Qualification
Tournament.
The CAVB held its technical meeting on Monday, and formulized the schedule of the competition. The meeting was attended by Control Committee president, Majore Louis Timba, and other senior officials of the CAVB.
Speaking of the significance and purpose of the tournament, the President of Cameroon Volleyball Federation Louis Timba said, “We need to have a successful event here in Cameroon for this prestigious occasion of the Olympic Games Qualifications. What makes
the event more valuable is the participation of all the continental big forces specially the last African Nations Championship final four teams Cameroon, Egypt, Tunisia and Algeria.”
According to the competition formula, two matches will be played on each day. The tournament will be opened with match between Egypt and Tunisia. The host Cameroon will also have a match against Ghana on day 1 of the tournament.
Algerian team is scheduled to play two matches on day 2 of the tournament, where they will contest their skills against Ghana and Cameroon. On Thursday, Egypt will clash Algeria, while Tunisia will play its second match against Ghana. Friday will feature
Algeria vs. Tunisia and Cameroon vs. Egypt. Finally, the tournament will be closed with last two matches: Ghana vs. Algeria, and Tunisia vs. Cameroon.
The top team of the tournament will be finalised by counting the total points.
