2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship opens
The opening ceremony of the 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship – Women of the Small Countries Division’s qualification round recently took place in Torshavn, the capital city of Faroe Islands.
The championship began shortly afterwards featured a total of four women’s teams in all.
The chief guest of the opening ceremony was the Head of the local Sports Department and Deputy Mayor of the city, Jogvan Arge. The day did not just include the opening ceremony of the tournament; it also featured its first match.
The competition was played between the home team and their counterparts from Ireland. The match between the sides did not take long to reach its close as Faroe Islands squad was able to down their opponents in a clean sweep.
The first set of the match saw the Irish women being smothered by their opponents but Ireland stepped up in the second set and gave the Faroe Islands squad some tough competition.
However, Faroe Islands proved to be the stronger of the two as they bagged another win. The momentum generated by winning the first two sets of the game got the Faroe Islands to come out strong in the third set too and eventually secure a win that sealed
the deal on the match at the following final set scores, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-18.
Arge made the following comments as he declared the tournament open, “This is the first time in history that the Faroe Islands are hosting such an international event and this is extremely important for a small nation like ours. It helps the promotion of
the sport and puts the Faroe Islands and our city on the world map. This is also the result of the hard and dedicated work performed by the Faroese Volleyball family and the city of Tórshavn is proud of being part of this process. However, this is not yet
the end as we want to reach out for even higher goals.”
Next in line for the Faroe Island squad is a match against Liechtenstein.
