2012 Canada Open: Matthew Downton, Samuel Dunner pave way to Men’s Doubles pre quarter-finals
Men’s Doubles team Matthew Downton-Samuel Dunner played flawless badminton against Samuel Wadsworth-Bryan Yee in opening round of Yonex Canada Open and powered their way to pre quarter-finals on July 11, 2012.
This first round match, staged in Richmond Oval badminton arena, remained in full swing for 23 minutes and both compatriot pairs played their heart out before reading final result of 21-18 and 21-17.
The victorious duo Matthew-Samuel locked a splendid straight-set win and this timely success has boosted their confidence to face the top seeded pair Juergen Koch-Peter Zauner of Austria in next round.
Meanwhile, the losing Canadian team could not find the required chemistry which ultimately resulted in their early exit.
In first set of the match, both contenders remained close until one-minute break but then Samuel-Bryan failed to match their rivals’ speed in second half of the set.
Matthew and Samuel were bit cautious in the start as they moved slowly but still they managed to stay a couple of steps ahead of the opposing team.
They finished first half with a decent advantage in 11-9 and then doubled the lead immediately after the interval.
Later part of the game completely belonged to Matthew-Samuel as they prevailed in six continuous rallies after 12-14 to reach a dominating position of 18-14.
The twosome of Samuel-Bryan was harmless and armless in the final stage of the game and surrendered after reading a decisive score of 21-18.
Their bad patch continued in second set also as they failed to forge a fruitful partnership and knelt down tamely.
On the other hand, the triumphant team of previous game showed consistency in their performance and secured a second round seat.
Matthew and Samuel established a respectable lead by clinching four points straight away in the beginning and enjoyed the upper hand all the way to half time.
They did not drop this pace at any stage and placed a distinctive margin of 11-7 before the one-minute break.
After the interval, they pushed their competitors in all areas of the court and strengthened their grip with 17-11 total.
This campaign prove deciding factor and Matthew-Samuel stole the limelight with a convincing figure of 21-17.
