2012 Copenhagen Masters: Satisfaction and disappointment at the same time for Hu Yun
Hong Kong’s Hu Yun started Yonex Copenhagen Masters as one of the frontrunners but he could not live up to the billing and faced a woeful ending in this tournament.
World Number ten Hu Yun raised his chances by overpowering Viktor Axelsen in his opening match but another Danish campaigner Jan O Jorgensen put his unbeatable run at halt.
The talented Men’s Singles expert kick-started his campaign with an impressive win over a lower ranked opponent Viktor Axelsen.
This epic tussle prolonged to three exhausting sets as both contenders challenged each other in all areas of the game and made this a memorable contest.
The battle heated up immediately in first set as the native shuttler performed beyond expectations and confounded his higher ranked rival.
Viktor Axelsen unleashed a flurry of well placed strokes and established a decent lead in no time. He made best out of this initial advantage and transformed it into a mountainous figure of 11 before the interval.
After the mid-game break, the Danish campaigner lost grip for short span of time and allowed his competitor to narrow the gap but then few productive strokes reinstated his dominance.
Though, Hu Yun put an honest effort but he could not tip the scale in his favour and surrendered after reading 17-21 score.
However, he did not take much time to end this bad patch and stormed back in very next game. This time he did not repeat previous mistakes and tipped the scale in his favour straight away in the beginning.
Hu Yun finished first half of the set with a respectable margin and then turned his rival’s plan of straight-set victory into dust with an impressive knock of 23-21.
The decider was expected to be a nerve racking contest but the Hong Kong shuttler made it a one-sided affair.
He started the beating from very first stroke and kept the bird under control until last shot was played. He sealed a splendid win by registering a convincing figure of 21-14.
This tide of luck took him into the final round where Jan O Jorgensen was all set to take on him. Both contenders locked horns for two games and this crucial encounter ended in favour of Danish player.
Though, Hu Yun made every effort to stretch his winning streak but his fluctuated performance proved the biggest hurdle in his way to success.
He took off in perfect manner but then few back-to-back mistakes brought him down in the crucial stage. He lost first set of the match with huge deficit of nine points in 21-12 total.
The second set was not different as the Hong Kong shuttler failed to come out of his competitor’s influence and crashed out in disgraceful manner.
Hu Yun kept trailing behind on points table and this passive approach ultimately led him to a 11-21 defeat.
