2012 Danish Junior Cup: Julie Finne, Rikke Soby prevail in final round of Women’s Doubles event
Women’s Doubles shuttlers Julie Finne Ipsen-Rikke Soby Hansen of Denmark stayed invincible in the final round of Danish Junior Cup and emerged as champions on October 14, 2012.
They unseated Chloe Birch-Holly Smith of England to claim top spot on the victory stand. They registered final figures of 21-15 and 21-16 after an exhausting exercise of 32 minutes.
This grand finale held at local badminton arena of Gentofte in Denmark and a huge crowd was there to support the native shuttlers in this tough battle.
The local campaigners did not disappoint their supporters and gave them a solid reason to celebrate by sealing a straight-set win.
Meanwhile, the British shuttlers who were hot favourites for this title failed to continue their unbeatable run and knelt down in a disgraceful manner.
The battle heated up straight away in the beginning of first set as Julie and Rikke unleashed a flurry of power packed strokes and confined their challengers in the rear court.
They set the ball rolling with three consecutive points and then magnified the impact by ruling the court in four uninterrupted rallies before the one-minute break.
Later part of the game was also dominated by the Danish ladies as they showed consistency in their performance and kept their competitors at the lower end.
Though, Chloe and Holly geared themselves in the third quarter of the set and narrowed the gap with a few back-to-back points but this short campaign was not enough to avoid a 15-21 defeat.
The second set was also played in similar fashion as at one stage the British shuttlers showed some spark and it was felt that they will survive this crucial segment of the tussle but then the opposing team turned the tables with a striking knock.
Julie and Rikke kept low profile in the beginning and remained close to their rivals on points table but they injected more intensity in their attack and made a notable difference just before half time.
After the mid-game break, they raised their lead to five points and then swept the table with scoreboard flashing 21-16 total in their favour.
