2012 Denmark Open: Wang Yihan intercepts Juan Gu en route to Women’s Singles quarter-finals
China’s prime female shuttler Wang Yihan served notice of her class in the second round of Yonex Denmark Open and earned a spot in the quarter-finals on Thursday, October 18, 2012.
This Women’s Singles pre quarter-final match saw her swinging arms against Juan Gu of Singapore.
Though, World Number one Wang Yihan sealed a straight-set victory with 22-20 and 21-14 margin but still she had to wait for 44 minutes before raising her hands as victor.
The opposing shuttler Juan Gu also showed great fighting spirit and walked tall despite of crashing out of this Premier Super Series.
In first set of the match, the Chinese campaigner had a sluggish start as she dropped many valuable points and allowed her rival to enjoy the upper hand in the establishing rallies.
Wang Yihan trailed behind until 3-7 but she did not remain at the lower end permanently and managed to rise from the dust with six consecutive points. However, she lost focus again and let few vital points slip from her hands.
The Singaporean player made best out of her competitor’s blunders and finished the first half of the set with a respectable score position of 11.
Later part of the game was also filled with great sensation as both contenders snapped at each other’s heels and made this tie a memorable contest.
They put all in their possession but neither of them could make a notable difference until17-17. Finally, this cliff-hanging tussle ended when Wang Yihan placed an overwhelming figure of 22-20.
The second set proved a one-sided affair after the interval as the Chinese shuttler dominated overall pace of the game.
Wang Yihan set the ball rolling with couple of productive rallies and placed a respectable total of 7 in no time.
She maintained this rhythm and kept her opponent under control until 11-8 score before the announcement of break.
After the half time, Juan Gu showed some spark and created few challenges for her competitor but her fluctuated performance triggered the collapse and she surrendered after reading decisive figure of 14-21.
The victorious shuttler Wang Yihan will test her skills against Sung Ji Hyun of Korea.
