2012 Ede Clendinnen Shield: Stuart Gomez outshines Raymond Darmawan in Men’s Singles tie
NSW Thunder’s talented campaigner Stuart Gomez relished full benefits of his recent form and stamped Raymond Darmawan in Ede Clendinnen Shield Sydney on Monday, August 27, 2012.
This 49-minute tussle was the third Men’s Singles tie of a match between Western Australia and NSW Thunder as both contenders tested each other skills in three exhausting sets.
They put a spell binding performance and kept the audience intact while piling up a final result of 21-13, 23-25 and 21-12.
The victorious shuttler locked the honour despite putting a fluctuated performance whereas the opposing player could live his moment of glory only in the second set of the match.
In the opening game, Stuart launched an intensive attack and confined his challenger to the rear court. He employed interesting tactics and confounded Raymond with a fine blend of power packed smashes and deceiving drop net shots.
The first half ended with Stuart enjoying a respectable score position of 11 but it was not a smooth road to victory in later part of the game as his competitor showed his spark and brought life back into the contest.
Raymond prevailed in couple of uninterrupted rallies and narrowed the gap but this short campaign was not enough to avoid a 21-13 defeat.
However, he made amends in very next game and survived this nerve-racking segment of the battle.
This time he played with a positive approach and challenged his rival in all areas of the court. He managed to stay equal in most part of the game and struck hard when it mattered.
Stuart, who was relaxed after an easy win in the first set, was not prepared for such kind of backlash and got pale in pressure situation.
He made every effort to regain his supremacy but could not stop Raymond from snatching the second set with 25-23 score on the board.
This revised status turned the decider into a survival of the fittest war as both contenders were looking to bag the final match point to seal their victory.
They remained toe-to-toe in the first half of the set but then Stuart made difference after the interval and left his challenger far behind with a convincing margin of 21-12.
