Men’s Doubles experts William Ponsonby-Toan Trinh of The Territories played impeccable badminton and thrashed Matthew Gillie-Brent Munday in Ede Clendinnen Shield Sydney on August 28, 2012.
This encounter remained in full swing for 42 minutes as both contenders put all they had to read final figures of 21-18, 13-21 and 17-21.
The Tasmanian shuttlers, who were hot favourites in this tussle, proved all predictions wrong by putting a below par performance in the ending two sets.
On the other hand, the underrated couple William-Toan performed beyond expectations and locked the honour in splendid manner.
Though, they had a horrendous start but they made amends when it mattered and fetched the vital match point for their team.
In the opening game, they struggled to get the required momentum and trailed their rivals all the way to game point situation.
First sign of trouble came when they slipped in a few consecutive rallies and allowed the opposing team to gain the upper hand.
The twosome of Matthew and Brent did not fritter away this opportunity and strengthened their grip with some valuable points in a row.
They maintained their upper hand until the last shot was played and finished the first set with a respectable score of 21-18.
However, things were not that easy for them in the following game as their rivals switched on their best and brought the contest to the right balance.
This time William and Toan played according to plan and their counter-attack strategy was so precise that on many occasions they beat their challengers move even before it was made.
They laid the foundation of their dominance by ruling the court in the first half and then stamped their supremacy with a staggering knock of 21-13 in the second half.
The decider turned into a do-or-die situation for both teams as they were standing on the same level with 1-1 match score.
They made every effort to oust each other in this closing segment of the showdown. They remained close on points table until final stage of the third set and this cliff-hanging battle ended when William-Toan placed a winning margin of 21-17.
