A belligerent 71-run knock from Paul Stirling outshined Hampshire batsman James Vince’s unbeaten 64 as Middlesex Panthers scripted their first win of this season’s Friends Life T20 tournament, defeating http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Hampshire-c789 Royals by six wickets at The Rose Bowl, Southampton,
on Monday, June 18.
Set to chase a respectable 158 to win, the Panthers reached their target in the final over, at the loss of just four wickets, courtesy a century stand between Paul Stirling and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 in international cricket, struck
eight muscular boundaries and two lofty sixes during his pugnacious 71, which came of just 49 deliveries.
Stirling’s belligerence was well supported by Malan (46 off 35 balls), as http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Middlesex-c817 handed Hampshire a thrashing that ended their impressive streak of eleven wins at home, which started back in July 2010.
After being put into bat by Middlesex skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MA-Carberry-c1868 provided the hosts a quick opening stand of 32, with the bulk coming from the former,
who also became the first victim of the day, clean bowled by Toby Roland Jones in the fourth over. He scored 25 runs from 15 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six as well during his 12-minute stay at the crease.
Adams’ dismissal took http://www.senore.com/Cricket/McKenzie-c75497 (caught by
Ollie Rayner) to leave the hosts 42 for 3 on the board.
Vince then took the onus of stabilizing Hampshire’s innings and reached his half-century off 42 balls. As wickets kept clattering at the other end, Vince continued challenging the Middlesex bowlers and returned unbeaten at 64, laced with five fours and a
six.
For Panthers, Roland-Jones claimed four wickets conceding just 25 runs in his quota of four overs, while http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90598 returned with figures of 2 for 30 from 4 overs.
The tourist got off to a shaky start losing openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Rogers-c1249 inside three overs with only 18 on the board. However, Stirling and Malan shared a beautifully knit three-digit partnership for the third wicket to put Middlesex on course to
a comfortable six-wicket win. By the time the duo holed out in quick succession, the game was all but over, with the visitors needing 23 runs from as many deliveries.
