2012 Hong Kong Open: R. M. V. Gurusaidutt clears first stage of Men’s Singles qualifying round
India’s budding shuttler R. M. V. Gurusaidutt had a perfect start in Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open as he eased into the second stage of the qualifying round on Tuesday, November 20, 2012.
He overpowered Cheng Po Wei of Chinese Taipei by registering a convincing margin of 21-15 and 21-16 in the opening match.
This Men’s Singles encounter prolonged to 33 minutes and both contenders entertained the crowd with a fine display of skills in the local badminton arena.
The victorious shuttler showed superior badminton craft and locked a straight-set win in a commendable manner.
On the other hand, the Taipei campaigner lost the battle despite putting an extra effort throughout both games.
In the opening game, Gurusaidutt was a bit sluggish in the establishing rallies as he dropped many valuable points and allowed his competitor to remain close until 4-4.
However, he did not take much time to come out of this bad patch and started pocketing vital points at a steady pace.
The Indian lad showed great maturity in his craft and laid the foundation of his supremacy with a mountainous total of 11-6.
He did not lose focus even after the one-minute break and maintained the upper hand until last shot was played.
Though, Cheng Po Wei made every effort to end his rival’s rule on the court but he could not tip the scale in his favour.
Gurusaidutt showed elevated craft in the final moments and bagged this match point with a staggering knock of 21-15.
The second set was did not bring much for the Taipei shuttler as he failed to match his competitor’s skills and kept trailing behind all the way to game point situation.
Po Wei showed some spark in the beginning as he prevailed in a couple of consecutive rallies and stayed equal until 6-6 but his fluctuated performance jeopardised his stakes.
Meanwhile, Gurusaidutt capitalised his challenger’s blunders and swept the table with a significant difference.
At first, the Indian player mounted pressure with 14-8 and then sent Po Wei packing by putting 21-16 score on the board.
Now he will lock horns with Chan Yan Kit of Hong Kong to gain access to the main round of this tournament.
