2012 Hong Kong Open: Shin Baek Choel, Yoo Yeon Seong power their way to pre quarter-finals
Korea’s spirited duo Shin Baek Choel-Yoo Yeon Seong played impeccable badminton and gained access to pre quarter-finals of Yonex Sunrise Hong Kong Open on November 21, 2012.
They overpowered the higher ranked team Hong Wei-Shen Ye of China in a hard fought tussle which prolonged to 51 minutes.
Both Men's Doubles teams kept the audience glued to their chairs while registering final figures of 21-12, 13-21 and 21-10.
The Chinese duo that was one of the top teams in this Super Series failed to forge a fruitful chemistry and crashed out in a woeful manner.
On the other hand, the unseeded Korean pair performed beyond expectations and ensured its presence in the second round where the Indonesian couple Mohammad Ahsan-Hendra Setiawan will be waiting for them.
Baek Choel and Yeon Seong made their intentions clear by clinching first match point with distinction.
They played cautiously in the establishing rallies and remained at the lower end until 3-0 but they geared themselves up and made swift progress to 7-4 total.
The opposing team was not ready for such an intensive attack as Hong Wei and Shen Ye could not rise on their toes until 5-11 margin before the interval.
After the mid-game break, both Chinese players failed to counter-balance the situation and lost this crucial set with 12-21 score.
However, they did not remain at the lower end permanently and managed to bounce back into the contest in the very next game.
They played with great conviction and established an unassailable lead with an 11-5 margin.
After the one-minute break, Hong Wei and Shen Ye did not lose focus at any stage and outclassed their challengers in all areas of the game. They registered a winning figure of 21-13 and setup a nerve-racking third set.
Unexpectedly, the decider turned into a one-sided affair as the Korean campaigners showed a transformed character and locked the honour.
The twosome of Baek Choel and Yeon Seong looked at their best as both partners displayed commendable coordination and finished this crucial set with a huge difference of eleven points.
They maintained an upper hand all the way to game point situation and placed an overwhelming score of 21-10.
