2012 London Olympics marks 100-day countdown – Volleyball news
The biggest sports gala of the year, the 2012 London Olympic Games, is scheduled to be kicked off on July 28 and today the upcoming event of Olympics marked 100-day countdown since it is April 18.
The clock is ticking down quickly and after exact 100 days, the beach volleyball tandems from all around the world will hit the sand at Horse Guards Parade, which is situated at the heart of London and near the Prime Minister House.
In order to stick a memory for the great competition, the Olympic Organising Committee arranged a colourful ceremony at the tournament venue on Wednesday. More than 200 Guardsmen from the Grenadier, Scots, Coldstream, and Welsh Guards gathered at the Horse
Guards Parade and created a wonderful array of entertainment for the onlookers.
The 2012 London Olympic Games will feature both indoor and beach volleyball competition. In the beach volleyball category, a total of 96 beach volleyball teams (two-player teams) will be on board to contest their game skills. The race for Olympic tickets
is ON, whereas some of the countries have already secured spots via Continental Qualifying Tournaments.
Many of the beach volleyball duos are hopeful to earn Olympic Qualification through the SWATCH FIVB World Tour event. The first event of the 2012 SWATCH FIVB World Tour, the Brasilia Open, started off in Brazil this past Sunday. The Brasilia Open will serve
as the Olympic qualifying tournament and it will award the Olympic ranking points to the successful teams of the competition. Afterwards, the qualification process will be continued until the end of Rome Grand Slam, which will complete its run on June 17.
At the end of Rome Grand Slam, top 16 teams from Olympic Ranking will earn tickets to the Olympic Games. So far, South Africa is the only that has two men’s duos confirmed for the Olympic Games. The South African team recently defeated competitors from Angola
at the African Continental Cup Finals in Mauritius and reserved the Olympic berth.
Following the successful completion of African Continental Cup Finals, the South American, NORCECA, Asian and European teams will get the chance to vie for Olympic ticket through their respective Continental Cup finals. The CSV Men’s Beach Volleyball Continental
Cup is set to take place, in Venezuela from June 2 to 3, whereas the AVC Men’s Beach Volleyball Continental Cup final will be held in China from June 20 to 24. Mexico will host the NORCECA Men’s Beach Volleyball Continental Cup final in from June 21 to 23
and the CEV competition in Alanya, Turkey will be last phase of Continental Cup finals.
The women’s duos will have the same procedure for Olympic seats. At the end of qualification phase, 28 men’s and 28 women’s duos will be finalised for the competition.
