2012 Macau Open: An early exit for Gan Teik Chai, Soon Ong Hock from Men’s Doubles event
Malaysia’s prime team Gan Teik Chai-Soon Ong Hock was expected to escort the country to the final rounds of Kumpoo Macau Open Badminton Grand Prix Gold but it could not live up to the expectations in the opening round on November 28, 2012.
Both experienced Men’s Doubles experts failed to forge a fruitful chemistry against Ronel Estanislao-Paul Jefferson Vivas and crashed out in a disgraceful manner.
This hard fought tussle prolonged to three gruelling sets before ending with final result of 21-10, 18-21 and 21-17.
The lower ranked but spirited duo Ronel-Paul prevailed in the opening and ending segments of this showdown whereas the Malaysian campaigners could live their moment of glory only in the second set.
Ronel and Paul looked completely on song in the opening game as they outclassed their superior rivals tactically and technically.
They made their intentions clear by prevailing in the establishing rallies and gained a decent advantage with 8-2 total.
This initial lead boosted their confidence and they piled up a respectable margin of 11-4 before the interval.
After the mid-game break, Teik Chai and Ong Hock made every effort to counter-balance the situation but they had to surrender after reading 10-21 score on the board.
However, the following game brought something to cheer for the Malaysian badminton lovers as their national players managed to save the honour.
The twosome of Teik Chai-Ong Hock was a bit confused in the beginning as both partners took some time to come out of their competitors’ influence.
They remained at the lower end until the announcement of one-minute break but they geared up themselves in third quarter of the set and made a notable difference with 17-13 total.
They did not lose focus and swept the table with a significant margin of 21-18.
This development subjected both pairs to a tough trial as they were standing equal with one win each.
The decider heated up with few back-to-back exhausting rallies and both contenders chased each other until the final stage.
This nerve-racking tussle concluded when Ronel and Paul raised hands as victors after putting 21-17 score on the board.
