2012 Major League Baseball All Star Selection: Detroit Tigers’ Prince Fielder
Prince Fielder may not be having a career best season this year but he is still the clear All Star Game choice where the fans are concerned. Fielder secured almost twice as many votes as Albert Pujols for the upcoming midsummer classic on July 10 in Kansas
City.
Detroit Tigers’ first baseman is one of the most of talented and expensive players in the American League right now. His 38 home-runs with an impressive batting average last season explain why the Tigers offered him the fourth largest contract in history
of the game.
Although he has not been able to fulfil his immense hitting potential in first half of 2012, he is still ranked above Los Angeles Angels’ Pujols in the eyes of fans. According to sources, Fielder will be joined by team-mates Justin Verlander and Miguel Cabrera
in Kansas City and it will be interesting to see if he can deliver the goods once more to become one of the greats of the game.
“I don’t know why that is,” Fielder said in an interview with a top sports website. “I don’t have that many in my family (to vote). I’m just thrilled the fans want to see me play. It’s an honor to be able to participate and get voted in.”
Fielder is averaging .299 with 15 home-runs and 63 RBI’s this season as his OBP of .380 also falls in the top 10 of American League. It was the fourth time Fielder made it to the All Star Game and he will be making his third straight start on Wednesday.
He played a key role in National League’s 5-1 win in 2011 with a three run home-run.
For his match winning effort, he was named the game’s Most Valuable Player. With all the support from his fans and family, Fielder is likely to put up another masterful performance in this year’s midseason tradition.
Both Pujols and Fielder had over four million votes last year. However, Pujols has managed to win just over two million people this year to finish fifth on the voting. The in-form Chicago White Sox slugger Paul Konerko finished second on the voting list
and he will be added to the American League’s team as a reserve.
