2012 Major League Baseball All Star Selections: Minnesota Twins’ Joe Mauer
Joe Mauer, who missed most of the games last season, has made it to the All Star team. The Twins’ catcher was grateful to be asked to the All Star Game and he will be looking to show the baseball world what he is capable of.
In a team meeting, Twins’ Manager Ron Gardenhire informed Mauer and the club about his selection for the game. According to sources, the St. Paul native has been added to the American League All Star squad as a reserve for the upcoming Midseason tradition
on July 10.
Considering all the troubles the Twins and himself faced last year, not many expected Mauer to post one of the finest seasons of his career in 2012. The guy should be proud of his achievements over the last couple of months. Right now he is averaging .326
with five home-runs and 41 RBI’s. Also, his .416 “On Base Percentage” is the highest among all hitters in American League.
"Any time you get asked to the All-Star Game its a great honor,'' he said about 45 minutes before today's game. "After the season we had last year and the season I had last year, it's nice to go. It just kind of hit me that I'll be heading there. We have
a ballgame in a few minutes too, so there's a lot running through my head right now."
Mauer has made it to the All Star team on five previous occasions, the most recent in 2010. In an interview with a leading sports website, he mentioned that the likes of Denard Span, Jared Burton and Josh Willingham also deserved the honour and was disappointed
with the fact none of them made it to the All Star team.
"I was hoping to bring a couple with me," Mauer said. "We have a lot of guys in there with great years and definitely deserve it."
With just one All Star selection, the Twins are having an extremely difficult season. Additionally, Josh Willingham, who had high hopes of getting into the All Star team, will have to wait for another year to get enough fan votes.
