2012 NFL Season: Can Eli Manning get his third Super Bowl ring? (Part I)
In his relatively short National Football League (NFL) career, quarterback Eli Manning has been able to make a name for himself apart from enjoying overall fame his family has achieved. His father Archie Manning was a great quarterback of his time while Eli’s elder brother Peyton Manning, being the only four-time Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the league, is still enthralling the sport lovers.
Eli, 31, has played eight NFL seasons, all for New York Giants, and has led the team to winning two Super Bowl titles. Although he has defeated Peyton as far as the number of Super Bowl victories is concerned, he still needs a lot of time to reach even close to his elder brother’s stature.
Manning impressively led the team in the 2011 season and won his second Super Bowl ring. As the Giants prepare for the 2012 season, everyone is asking if they will be able to defend their title.
This is something the league has not seen quite often. The team that wins the NFL title usually struggles to win it again in the next season, but that does not rule out the possibility of any team defending its title successfully.
In order for Giants to successfully defend their title, Eli’s performance is going to be very crucial. This is not only because he holds the key position in the offence, but also because he brings a lot of energy and experience to the side.
Being able to win two NFL titles is certainly a commendable achievement and the team management and fans have high expectations from Eli.
However, Eli alone will not be able to lead the team to winning the Super Bowl this season let alone getting a shot at it. It calls for a consistent team effort and even though Eli has been constantly performing well for Giants, he must receive the due support equally on the offence and defence to awe the audience again.
Let’s take a glimpse at Eli’s career before proceeding further.
2004 NFL Draft
Rated as the top prospect quite well before the draft, Eli was set to be selected as first overall pick in 2004. San Diego Chargers had the first overall pick and they were pretty excited about Eli.
However, the quarterback had clearly asserted that he would not play for the Chargers, leaving them in a desperate situation. Chargers eventually ended up agreeing to a deal with Giants. Chargers did draft Eli, but they traded him soon after it to Giants who in return sent Philip Rivers to San Diego.
