2012 NHL All-Star Skills Competition New York Rangers' Carl Hagelin scores in fastest skating
The 2012 Molson Canadian National Hockey League (NHL) All-Star Skills Competition fastest skating was the first attraction of the night on Saturday, January 28, 2012, as the fans roared with joy seeing their team in action against the league’s best in different
departments of game-play.
Carl Hagelin of the New York Rangers and Team Alfredsson, was up against Ottawa Senators and Team Chara’s, Colin Greening, in the fastest skater competition, making it extremely exciting as both players raced to cover a set of obstacles around the ice rink.
Hagelin was also the fastest skater in the qualifying round as well with a completion time of only 12.963 seconds, which at the time was also barely ahead of his opponent, Colin Greening.
It was the first event of the NHL Skills Competition and Hagelin certainly did not fail to impress as he blistered the course with a time of 13.218 seconds while Greening finished it with a bigger difference this time around with 13.303.
"I never have really done that exact circuit. It was a pretty tight turn," Hagelin told NHL.com. "I thought it was just going to be a lap, but I went against a fast guy, which obviously helped. When you're going against a fast guy you usually skate a little
bit faster."
Other players were also taking part in the competition but were no where the match for Hagelin as Senators’ defenseman, Erik Karlsson, part of Team Alfredsson, finished at the second number with a time of 13.021 seconds beating Kris Letang and Brian Campbell.
Goalies were also at it as Los Angeles Kings’ goalie, Jonathan Quick, defeated the Detroit Red Wings’ goaltender, Jimmy Howard with a time of 16.939 seconds compared his opponents 17.514.
"I got smoked," Howard said. "It was pretty bad. It was to the point where Quickie could basically even stop and look back at me."
Having a good time was the basic objective of the night before the All-Star Game kicks of Sunday night as not only players, but the thousands of fans also prepare for the most star studded event of the year.
