2012 National Circuit GP Finals: Goh Soon Huat tames Soong Joo Ven in Men’s Singles group stage
Malaysia’s Goh Soon Huat stretched his winning run in Maybank National Circuit Grand Prix Finals and trounced Soong Joo Ven in group stage on Thursday, December 27, 2012.
This short-lived battle took place in Alor Setar and it ended with final result of 21-19 and 21-11. The victorious shuttler setup his next clash with another compatriot player Goh Giap Chin.
Soon Huat established a strong grip over game immediately in the first set and maintained that upper hand all the way to final moments.
Meanwhile, the opposing player could not show his brilliance in both segments of the showdown and crashed out.
The opening game started with Soon Huat ruling the court in establishing rallies. He did not lose grip and kept his challenger at the lower end.
Though, Joo Ven made every effort to counterbalance the situation but his fluctuated performance proved the biggest hurdle for him.
On the other hand, Soon Huat capitalised his rival’s blunders and reinstated his dominance way before the interval. He enjoyed a decent lead until the mid-game break and placed a mountainous figure of 11.
After the one-minute break, he lost focus for short span of time but he did not allow his opponent to establish a permanent lead.
He struck hard when it mattered and wrapped this segment of the showdown with a favourable score. He ended this set with a two-point difference in 21-19 total.
The following game was a one-sided affair as Soon Huat did not allow his competitor to proceed on the points table and sent him packing with a staggering knock.
This time he launched an intensive attack and confined Joo Ven in the rear court. He made best out of this psychological edge and finished first half of the set with an indomitable figure of 11.
The latter part of game was completely dominated by Soon Huat as he did not make even a single mistake and swept the table with a convincing margin.
He strengthened his grip by putting 17-8 total in third quarter off the set and then sealed his straight-set victory with 21-11 score on the board.
