2012 Norris Trophy award: NHL announces nominations of top three defensemen - NHL News
The National Hockey League (NHL) confirmed on Thursday, April 26, 2012, to have finalised list of top three defensemen for this year’s Norris Trophy award.
The Norris Trophy is awarded to a top defenseman of the league each year. With this year’s award giving ceremony scheduled to be held on June 15, the trophy will be given to one of the following three players from the defensive positions.
The league’s announced shortlisted names are of Nashville Predators’ Shea Weber, Ottawa Senators’ Erik Karlsson and Boston Bruins’ Zdeno Chara.
Weber has been nominated for the trophy award for the second consecutive time, while the other defensemen have made it to the nominations for the first time.
One of them will be given the trophy at the ceremony to be held at the Encore Theatre at Wynn Las Vegas.
It will be attended by celebrities and stars from entertainment and sports industries, former and present NHL players and some well known figures from other walks of life.
The league awards its best players and officials every year as a token of appreciation of their talent and skills, and this year, too, the office will be giving trophies and other prizes to leading players and staffers in ten different categories.
A formal process of the awards and giving-away ceremony has begun with the nominations of three finalists from each category from April 20. It will complete with final nominations to be announced on April 30.
The office has already named top three players in several different categories. The announcements are made on the pattern of three finalists for a category each day.
One of the three nominated players or officials will be selected through votes of either the general managers of all teams representing NHL or NHL Writers Association members.
Each top player or official is expected to be finalised well before the award-giving ceremony.
NHL Commissioner is going to head the ceremony, probably. The NHL season, which at the moment is into first round of the playoffs series/quarterfinals, will be well over by then.
