Men’s Doubles experts Mattijs Dierickx-Freek Golinski continued with their top form and paved a path to the quarter-finals of the Polish Open after thrashing Rafal Hawel-Maciej Kowalik on August 31, 2012.
This pre quarter-final tussle remained in full swing for 47 minutes and both contenders kept the audience glued to their chairs while piling up decisive figures of 16-21, 21-17 and 22-20.
The victorious duo came back from a horrendous start and locked the honour by proving their mettle in the last two games.
On the other hand, the local shuttlers disappointed their supporters by kneeling down despite of having a psychological edge.
Rafal and Maciej, who had a notable support of the spectators, took off in perfect manner as they ruled the court on merit in the opening game.
They laid the foundation of their dominance by snatching five consecutive points in the beginning and then raised their total to 8-2 in no time.
At mid-game break, the Polish shuttlers were enjoying the upper hand with figure of 11 but then a couple of unforced errors brought them down.
However, Rafal and Maciej did not take much time to come out of this phase and swept the table with an impressive knock of 21-16.
The Belgian campaigners did not lose heart after this failure and reacted like wounded tigers in the very next game.
They employed interesting tactics and enthralled their opponents with a fine blend of power packed smashes and deceiving drop net shots.
In the first half of the set, Mattijs-Freek played with cautious approach and trod carefully but steadily.
They established their grip over the game with 5-2 but their supremacy was short lived as the opposing team made swift progress and placed a favourable figure of 11-8 before interval.
The twosome of Mattijs and Freek did not show any sign of bewilderment and managed to survive this crucial segment with 21-17 score.
Now both teams were locked in a tough competition as they were equal with one win each. They put up a laudable effort and made the decider a memorable contest.
Finally, the Belgian campaigners placed convincing figure of 22-20 and earned right to compete against Andrej Ashmarin-Sergey Shumilkin in the quarter-finals of this International Series.
