2012 Polish Open: Edgaras Slusnys intercepts Przemyslaw Urban in Men’s Singles qualification round
Lithuania’s Edgaras Slusnys gave a strong statement about his form when he unseated Przemyslaw Urban during the qualification round of the Polish Open on Thursday, August 30, 2012.
Though, this Men’s Singles encounter prolonged to just 27 minutes but still both contenders entertained the crowd with a commendable show of badminton skill.
However, Edgaras showed superior finishing techniques and raised his hands as the victor after putting up favourable figures of 22-20 and 21-18.
He played with great conviction and sealed a splendid straight-set victory to march into the second stage of the qualification round where he will be up against Pawel Pradzinski.
Earlier in first round, he started his campaign by taking some time to get settled. He kept trailing behind until 3-7 but then couple of uninterrupted rallies helped him to catch his rival before the interval.
Later part of the game was full of drama as neither of them could establish a permanent lead and chased each other all the way to game point situation.
At first, Edgaras mounted pressure by grabbing a few valuable points in a row but he could not go with same flow in the third quarter of the set.
The local shuttler Przemyslaw did not squander this opportunity and made the best out of it by levelling the score at 17-17.
Both contenders snapped at each other’s heels in the next couple of rallies and this nerve-racking game ended when Edgaras placed a tight yet decisive margin of 22-20.
Next game was also played in the same manner as the Lithuania campaigner blundered in the beginning but then thundered when it mattered.
On the other hand, the Polish shuttler failed to transform his initial lead into a decisive total and crashed out of the home event.
In the first half of the set, Przemyslaw established his grip over the game with 5-2 and then got into an authoritative position by putting up a figure of 9-6.
First sign of trouble came when he lost focus and allowed his competitor to counter-balance the situation just before the break.
Edgaras played positive badminton and kept moving at a steady pace. He did not falter in the pressure situation and swept the table with 21-18 total.
