2012 Polish Open: Patrick Lundqvist, Jonathan Nordh power their way to round of eight
Men’s Doubles experts Patrick Lundqvist-Jonathan Nordh saved their country’s honour and led Sweden to the quarter-final round of the Polish Open on Friday, August 31, 2012.
They unseated Michael Campbell-Patrick Machugh in a hard fought tussle and setup their next clash with the British pair Chrisopher Coles-Matthew Nottingham in the round of eight of this International Series.
The third seeded duo of the tournament Patrick-Jonathan took one hour to read favourable result of 18-21, 21-14 and 21-17.
This pre quarter-final match was a real feast for the eyes as both contenders played with great precision and made the crowd gasp with their breath-taking performance.
Though, the Scottish campaigners gained an early advantage by clinching the very first match point but they failed to capitalise this initial lead and surrendered tamely in crucial moments of the encounter.
Michael and Patrick registered their presence with a commendable show of badminton skills in the first set.
They took some time to get on the right track but never looked back after gaining the required momentum.
In the first half of the set, they were a bit wavered as many of their strokes landed outside the court. They could not gain a notable lead but still managed to place a decent total of 11 before the break.
After the one-minute interval, Patrick and Jonathan showed some spark but it was not enough to burn down the opposing team who finished this set with a 21-18 margin.
However, the Swedish team made amends in very next game as they turned their challengers’ plans of a straight-set victory into dust by claiming the second set with distinction.
This time, Patrick-Jonathan played with a positive approach and established an immediate lead with a few successive points.
Both Men’s Doubles partners cornered their competitors with 7-3 and then pushed them into dark by reaching a dominating position of 11-3.
Later part of the game completely belonged to Patrick-Jonathan who dominated the opposing team with an overwhelming knock of 21-14.
The decider was expected to be a nerve racking contest as both pairs were standing equal with one win each.
They chased each other until final phase of the set and kept the audience intact with their mesmerising performance.
This cliff-hanging set ended when the Swedish shuttlers locked the honour with a respectable advantage in 21-17 score.
