2012 Ryder Cup Captain Jose Maria Olazabal hopes Sergio Garcia will make it in the European Team
Leading Spanish player Jose Maria Olazabal, Captain of the European team for the Ryder Cup 2012, is confident that struggling Sergio Garcia will eventually be able to make it in the squad well ahead of the time. Olazabal was talking about the prospects of
the European team on Tuesday, October 18 and the possible contenders who might be on the team.
“I am sure Sergio will be in the Ryder Cup, he’s got a special charisma and a solid game,” said Olazabal. “His best motivation is to know what it feels like to be in the Ryder Cup without playing.”
Garcia was the Vice Captain in last year’s Ryder Cup standing firm behind the Captain Colin Montgomerie. The European team clinched a historic win at the scenic Celtic Manor resort and with the current upsurge in the European golf, the tour will be expecting
a similar outcome next year. What Olazabal said regarding his countryman Garcia, could possibly be a forewarning for Garcia. As cold as he can get, Olazabal might want to make it clear that he will not be picking up Garcia as a Captain’s choice, rather he
will have to make it in the team through merit.
While Garcia, who has not won a single event since his last victory at HSBC Championship in 2008, remains optimistic of his chances of making it into the team.
“Without a doubt, The Ryder Cup is one of my goals next year. I want to make it – I don’t want to be chosen and leave that pick to the captain. If things go as well as they have this year, I feel I have a very good chance. Everyone knows how special the
Ryder Cup is for me.” said Garcia.
Fighting a finger injury at the start of the season, Garcia battled through tough times but remain afloat to participate in events on both sides of the Atlantic. He pulled in top-10 finishes in the US Open as well as the Open Championship this year and several
other strong finishes but was never able to reach the summit. He challenged countryman Pablo Larrazabal on a Playoff hole at the BMW International Open but lost on the fifth extra hole.
The 2012 Ryder Cup is scheduled at Medinah Country Club, Medinah County Illinois, where the traditional rivals American and European Teams will lock horns for one of the most revered titles of the sport. The course is already under renovations and the 15th
hole on the course has been turned into a drive-able par-four specifically for the event scheduled next year in September. While Olazabal will be leading the European entourage, Davis Love III will be leading the American team.
