2012 Season Preview: Dallas Cowboys take on New York Giants in season opener
Since winning their last Super Bowl title in the 1995 season, the Dallas Cowboys seem to have reached a stage where victories, especially when needed the most, have become hard to come for them.
They have long been searching a unit that could bring their glory days back and despite having a seemingly better squad, they have not yet been able to register any considerable performance in the past few years.
Since winning their last Super Bowl, Cowboys have registered seven playoff appearances and played a total of nine games in the postseason, winning only two.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones thinks that the Super Bowl window is closing for them and if the team does not win the title soon, it might not be able to win it at all.
With new winning spirits, under the leadership of quarterback Tony Romo, who also has a point to prove this season, the Cowboys are going to face the defending Super Bowl champions New York Giants in the first game of the season.
The National Football Conference (NFC) East rivals faced each other twice during the 2011 season as well and the Giants managed to win both of the games, eventually sending the Cowboys packing.
For Cowboys, the most tormenting loss was in Week 17 game, which was a do-or-die game for both Giants and Cowboys. Giants’ victory took them to the postseason while it ended the season for the Cowboys.
Cowboys certainly are capable of defeating the Giants, but they have to be disciplined. They are coming with a new defensive strategy that could be developed around their first-round draft pick of this year cornerback Morris Claiborne.
This could certainly test the Giants offence led by quarterback Eli Manning and if he does not do the due homework he might struggle against the Cowboys.
Furthermore, if Romo, who is statistically better than Manning, works hard on his inability to perform well under pressure and deliver his best performance at crucial moments, the Cowboys might be able to easily outscore the Giants.
Head-to-head
Cowboys have faced Giants 100 times. In their regular season meetings, Cowboys have won 56 games while Giants have won 41. Two games were tied. Both teams have faced each other only one time in playoffs and Giants managed to win that game. They both are
going to face each other twice, in Week 1 and Week 8, in the upcoming season.
