2012 Syed Modi International: P. V. Sindhu qualifies for Women’s Singles title match
India’s lower ranked but talented shuttler P. V. Sindhu made best out of her top form and secured a berth in title match of Syed Modi International India GPG on Saturday, December 22, 2012.
She was up against the Thai campaigner Sapsiree Taerattanachai and their meeting lasted for just two sets.
This short-lived tussle was staged at the local badminton complex of Lucknow and the native shuttler saved the honour with an impressive result of 21-12 and 21-14.
World Number 24 Sindhu performed tremendously well in both segments of the showdown and sealed a straight-set victory.
Meanwhile, the Thai player looked completely off colour as she hardly put any resistance and crashed out of this GP Gold event.
The battle heated up immediately in the beginning of first set as the Indian shuttler did not give her rival enough time to get settled and confounded her with an intensive attack.
She played skilfully in the establishing rallies and did not spare any loophole. This cautious approach helped her to keep the opposing shuttler under control.
Sindhu bagged eight consecutive points and finished first half of the set with a respectable total of 11.
After the one-minute break, she showed consistency in her performance and strengthened her grip over game.
Though, Sapsiree strived hard to narrow the gap on points table but she could not match her competitor’s skills.
The Thai player kept trailing behind all the way to game-point situation and finally surrendered after reading 12-21 score on the board.
The following game was not much different for her as Sindhu ruled the court from very first stroke and maintained her authority until last shot was played.
This time the Indian campaigner employed unusual tactics and proved herself superior tactically and technically.
Initially, she was bit sluggish and could not move swiftly across the court but then she perked up when it mattered and wrapped this showdown in just two games.
Sindhu mounted pressure by piling up an indomitable figure of 11 and then capitalised this psychological edge to place a winning margin of 21-14.
Now she is all set to resume her campaign in the final match of Syed Modi International India GPG.
