Group A: http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 (Poms win by seven wickets)
After losing their tournament opener to traditional rivals http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746, England sealed a comfortable seven wicket win over lowly-ranked Ireland, at Endeavour Park, Townsville, on Sunday, to open their account.
After putting the Irish side into bat, Reece Topley-led English attack bowled out the opposition for just 109 in 42.2 overs. Tyrone Kane (28) and skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/George-Dockrell-c59135 (26) were the only notable performers from Ireland. Andy McBrine was the only other
Irish batsman to reach double figures, scoring a painstaking 16 off 57 balls.
Left-arm seamer Reece Topley was once again the pick of England bowlers, claiming figures of three for 14 in his spell of nine overs, which included four maidens. Jamie Overton was the only English bowler to return wicket-less, though he was quite economical,
conceding only 13 runs in his five overs.
England started their innings a bit shakily, losing both their openers early in the chase. However, a 27-run partnership between Ben Foakes and Craig Overton, for the third wicket steadied things for the Poms. Foakes perished in the 20th over,
on 32, with the scorecard reading 54. In walked http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Aneesh-Kapil-c44658 and scored an unbeaten 31, in a 59-run stand with Overton, to take the side home in the 37th over, with seven wickets to spare.
England seamer Reece Topley bagged the Man of the Match accolade.
Group B: http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scotland-c756 (Kiwis clinch 39-run win)
New Zealand U-19 opened up their World Cup campaign with a 39-run victory over Scotland, in a Group B match, played at the John Blanck Oval, Buderim, on Sunday, August 12, 2012.
The Kiwis, after being put in, rode on skipper Will Young’s valiant century to set a competitive total of 247 for 9, from their stipulated 50 overs. Robert O’Donnell contributed with a calculated half century, in an 88-run stand with centurion Young for
the third wicket. The Black Caps were 179 for 3 at one stage and looked in a position to post a total somewhere near 300, but slipped to 247 for 9 at the end of their quota of 50 overs, courtesy a lower order capitulation, four wickets in two overs for just
10 runs. Ruaidhri http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Smith-c90598 led the Scotland attack, picking up 3 for 34 in his ten-over spell.
In reply, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Flintoff-c44360 Coleman’s 80-ball 65 was not enough to see Scotland home. Opener Ross McLean’s 36 off 54 was the other notable performance from the minnows, who could score 208 runs before being bundled out in the 47th overs. Ish Sodhi and Connor
Neynens picked three wickets apiece.
Kiwis skipper Will Young was declared as the Man of the Match.
