Group A: Australia V http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ireland-c751 (Kangaroos win by six wickets, with 57 balls remaining)
Defending champions Australia continued their unbeaten run in the ongoing youth extravaganza by clinching a six-wicket victory over Ireland in a Group A clash at Endeavour Park, in Townsville, on Tuesday.
Alex Gregory and Shane Cassel dismantled the Ireland batting line up, after the tourists opted to bat, bowling them out for just 129 in 42.5 overs. Opener Ryan Hunter was the only visiting batsman who stood up against the Australian attack with a gritty
31, off 39 balls. Tyrone Kane contributed with a hard-fought 21 in the middle, while the rest of the batting line-up fell for scores inside 16, amassing a paltry 129.
Alex Gregory was the pick of Australian bowlers, for not only claiming 3 scalps but also for bowling tight spells, conceding just 13 runs in eight overs, including four maidens. Leg-spinner Cassel also picked up three wickets for 24 runs, in his quota of
10 overs.
It turned out to be a comfortable chase for the title defenders, despite being reduced to 45 for three at one stage. Captain William Bosisto led Australia’s run chase scoring an unbeaten 36 in the middle, and sharing an unbeaten 59-run stand with Sam Hain
(26 not out), as the hosts cruised to the target in the 41st over, with six wickets to spare. Travis Head also scored a quick 25.
Australian leg-spinner Shane Cassel was declared as the Player of the Match.
Group B: New Zealand V http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Afghanistan-c745 (Kiwis win by eight runs)
New Zealand bowlers overcame a late fight back from Afghanistan’s lower order to seal a thrilling eight-run win in an enthralling Group B match, played at the Kev Hackney Oval, Buderim.
On a day when majority of the Black Caps’ batsmen were off colour, Robert O’Donnell and Henry Walsh stood up against the Afghanistan bowlers, scoring respective half centuries, to lift New Zealand to a par score of 198. O’Donnell played a meticulous knock
of 69 runs, well complemented by Walsh’s 97-ball 52. The duo was involved in a three-digit partnership for the fourth-wicket stand, to stabilize things for the side, after reeling at 20 for three. Sayed Shirzad and Yamin Ahmadzai shared eight wickets between
them, bowling at a combined average of 3.45.
Afghanistan looked almost out of the game after almost half of the side was out inside 10 overs, with only 26 runs on the board. But Najibullah Zadran’s fighting 69 runs, well supported by wicketkeeper batsman Afsar Khan’s 42 took the minnows close to the
victory line, needing 22 runs off the last two overs, with three wickets in hand. But Duffy and Quinn picked up a wicket each, to seal the deal in New Zealand’s way.
Matthew Quinn of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 clinched the man of the match title.
