2012 Vietnam Open: Sapsiree Taerattanachai casts out Adrianti Firdasari in pre quarter-final round
Women’s Singles campaigner Sapsiree Taerattanachai of Thailand played with great precision and ensured her presence in the quarter-finals of Yonex Sunrise Vietnam Open GP on August 23, 2012.
World Number 35 shuttler outshined Adrianti Firdasari by registering final figures of 19-21, 21-16 and 21-17 in a 52-minute encounter.
The Thai female player came back from behind and saved some honour by clinching the final two match points on merit.
On the other hand, the Indonesian shuttler failed to go with the same flow after the first set win and knelt down in crucial moments of the battle.
Adrianti Firdasari started her campaign in perfect fashion as she bagged first set with a tight yet favourable margin.
She employed interesting tactics and completely confounded the opposing shuttler. She kept a low profile in the beginning and just focused to maintain a good scoring pace.
However, she stunned her challenger with a brisk attack just before the interval. She maintained a slight edge also in the second half and served the notice of her supremacy with an overwhelming knock of 21-19.
The following game was filled with great sensation as at one stage Adrianti was in an authoritative position but then the Thai campaigner turned the tables with a gutsy performance.
Sapsiree Taerattanachai, who is placed at fourth spot in tournament ranking, took some time to get settled but she never slipped after establishing a strong grip over the game.
She started making swift progress by prevailing in a few uninterrupted rallies and then left her competitor behind with some consecutive points before half time.
Later part of the game was completely dominated by Sapsiree as she mounted pressure with a flurry of power packed strokes and then equalled the match score with 21-16 total.
The decider became a survival of the fittest war with this development and both female contenders made every effort to claim this final match point.
They remained toe-to-toe until the mid-game break but then Sapsiree made the difference during the third quarter of the set.
She widened the gap in final phase of the game and placed a winning margin of 21-17 to setup a quarter-final clash with Belaetrix Manuputi of Indonesia.
