2012 a good year for Caribbean Cricket – Part VII
Continued from Part VI...
After having comprehensively won the first two games, the Darren Sammy led Caribbean contingent needed one more win to seal the series. But the Kiwis had a different plan up their sleeves, as they turned the tables on the hosts in the third one-dayer at
the Warner Park, St Kitts, winning the match by 88 runs.
Half centuries scored by Rob Nicol (59) and Nathan McCullum (50), and a valuable 40-run knock by the wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BJ-Watling-c1172 propelled the tourists to 249 for 9 at the end of their stipulated 50 overs. Andre Russell was once again the hosts’ wrecker
in chief, returning with figures of 4 for 57 in nine overs, while Sunil Narine was the most economical bowler from the West Indies’ ranks, picking up two wickets while conceding just 28 runs in his quota of 10 overs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Russell-c87177 followed up his four-wicket haul with the ball with a whirlwind 42 not out, coming off just 24 balls. But his lone effort was not enough to avoid an 88-run thrashing, as he lacked support from the rest of the line-up (all other Windies batsmen fell
for scores inside 19). http://www.senore.com/Cricket/NL-McCullum-c2120 all took two wickets apiece.
The Caribbean side quickly recovered from the 88-un crushing, winning the next one-dayer at the same St Kitts venue by 24 runs, to take an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series. After opting to bat, the hosts rode on Kieron Pollard’s gutsy 56, well
complemented by Marlon Samuel’s 64-ball 46, to post a competitive total of 264 all out. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754
line-up fell for 240 runs in 49.3 overs. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RJ-Nicol-c2331 (35) and Tom Latham were the other notable performers, while the rest of the line-up struggled to get past the 11-run mark.
The fifth and final One Day International of the five-match series was also won by Darren Sammy and Co by 20 runs. Another impressive batting display by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andre-Dwayne-Russell-c44235 (59 not out), ably supported by Dwayne Bravo’s meticulous 53 helped the home side post
a respectable total of 241 for 9. In reply, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sunil-Philip-Narine-c91869’s five-wicket haul, as the whole visiting line-up fell for 221 runs.
Emerging Trinidad off-spinner Sunil Narine was declared as the Man of the Match (5 for 27) as well as the Player of the Series for finishing at the top of the wickets chart, with 13 scalps from five matches at an impressive average of 11.23 and a splendid
economy rate of less than 3 runs per over.
"Good feeling being able to come out and produce for your country. I am a bit nervous but I tend to try and keep cool, the hard work pays off at the end," said the mystery spinner after clinching the two accolades.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/DJG-Sammy-c1382 also had a special word of praise for the Trinidadian. "I think Narine is just world-class, having him gives us confidence especially when you are defending. We won most of the key sessions, we had one off day, the third
game, but came back very strongly," said the St Lucia all-rounder.
