2013 ICC Champions Trophy to be the last: ICC – Cricket News Update
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Haroon-Lorgat-c61719, the International Cricket Council’s Chief Executive, announced the body’s decision to let go of the Champions Trophy after its 2013 installment, in order to streamline cricket competitions and have one mega-event for each format of the game.
Lorgat explained that the governing body intends to introduce a Test Championship soon, and since the Champions Trophy caters to the 50-over format, for which there already is a World Cup competition, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 has decided to cut out the secondary event to make room for the Test competition.
"If you don't see it in the schedule, it means it is not planned for the future," said Lorgat. "We have said for a while that we would like one championship event for each format. We are including the Test championship in there. We have the World Cup to have the champion for 50-overs cricket. So we are not planning to hold Champions Trophy in the future," he added, after the executive board meeting this week.
Amidst growing calls for the revival of Test cricket, the ICC had announced a Test Championship to be held in 2013. However, since the Champions Trophy was already scheduled for the same year, and the governing body’s contractual commitments with broadcasters were a hurdle in changing the format of the event, the Test championship was postponed to 2017, and the coming edition of the Champions Trophy has been termed the last.
"We attempted to switch the Champions Trophy to become a Test championship but that is not going to be possible," revealed Lorgat, much to the disappointment of fans of the 5-day format, including http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Henry-Percy-Stephenson-c68060, the MCC Head of Cricket.
The Champions Trophy was initially dubbed the ICC Knock out Tournament in 1998, with its name having been changed in 2002. The 2009 edition was the most recent one, held in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Pakistan-c755, was deemed unsafe.
In the 6 total iterations of the competition till now, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 and Wales.
