2013 Korea Open: Lee Chong Wei storms into Men’s Singles quarter-final round
Malaysia’s ace shuttler Lee Chong Wei served the notice of his brilliance in the second round of Victor Korea Open and marched into the Men’s Singles quarter-finals on January 10, 2013.
He was up against a lower ranked player Marc Zwiebler of Germany who surrendered after a futile exercise of 34 minutes.
Both contenders locked horns in the local badminton arena of Seoul, Korea and their meeting lasted for just two games.
World Number one Chong Wei, who also holds top spot in the tournament ranking, sealed a splendid straight-set victory with 21-11 and 21-19 margin.
The Malaysian badminton maestro did not show mercy at any stage of the game and kept his rival grounded throughout this battle.
On the other hand, Marc Zwiebler looked completely dazzled in front of the Olympic silver medallist and crashed out in a disgraceful manner.
Chong Wei did not waste time and launched a brisk attack immediately in the opening game. He played flawless badminton in first set and bagged a valuable match point with distinction.
In first half of the set, he mounted pressure by piling up a respectable total of 6-1 and then magnified the impact by putting a mountainous figure of 11 before interval.
After the mid-game break, the German shuttler prevailed in couple of rallies and narrowed the gap on points table but then Chong Wei struck hard and tipped the scale in his favour.
He maintained a significant lead of ten points and wrapped this segment of the showdown with an overwhelming margin of 21-11.
However, it was not an easy road to victory in the following game as the opposing shuttler displayed great fighting spirit and registered his presence.
Initially, the Malaysian contestant relished full benefits of his first set win and placed a favourable total of 11 before the half time.
After the one-minute break, Marc Zwiebler showed some spark and it was felt that he will avoid a straight-set defeat.
Both shuttlers remained close until game point situation but finally Chong Wei swept the table with 21-19 score.
Now he is all set to take on Hu Yun of Hong Kong in the round of eight of this prestigious event.
