2013 LPGA: Suzann Pettersen aiming big
The end of an LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) season usually unveils something exciting and promising—and it is also a time of change in players’ priorities.
After the glitz and glamour of one of LPGA’s most celebrated event—CME Group Titleholders, the spotlight was shifted to Europeans and Americans from still-strong Asians.
With the 2013 season set to start in the next couple of weeks, players like Suzann Pettersen of Norway have proved that they are not going to give up without putting up a tough fight.
Pettersen has her reasons to believe why she is able to take the LPGA baton next year.
Winning titles at the LPGA Hana Bank Championship and Sunrise LPGA Taiwan Championship was something that breathed new life into her game.
Before winning the two titles, the Norwegian star had been teetering on the edge of failure because she desperately sought to end her performance slump.
With some observers appreciating Petersen’s performance in some of the last tournaments of the 2012 season, the 2013 season will require more than just experience.
When it comes to experience, the LPGA titan stands taller than most of her rivals. However, the new trend that has seen a massive influx of youngsters will be keeping veterans wary.
Nevertheless, the 2012 has been a year to remember and celebrate for some. Plenty of good golf was played as a new bunch of young guns unveiled their skills on the course, winning titles.
Pettersen was not the best but grabbed much of the attention. American Stacy Lewis took the leading role as she became the Rolex Player of the Year 2012, winning most events in a single event. She recorded a total of 16 top-10 finishes.
Lewis may have plenty of golf ahead of her, but Pettersen has also vowed to continue showing her skills on the course in the years to come.
The 31-year-old told during the CME Group Titleholders 2012 that her fans and critics often point out that she is past the era of achievements, because the LPGA has been taken over by much younger players.
She said that she is confident that she can still grab the first position in the world rankings.
When asked what her goal for the next year will be, Pettersen said that she is playing in order to win.
“We play the game to win it, don't we? I'm in it to win it. That says it all,” said the Norwegian golfer who has won a total of 10 LPGA titles since joining the Tour in 2003.
She said her game is as perfect as it was a decade back.
“There's a lot of golf left and I don't really think about it too much. I feel like my shoulders are fairly freed up after kind of winning two in Asia”.
