2013 Malaysia GP Gold: Aya Ohori treads into main round of Women’s Singles event

Japan’s young but spirited shuttler Aya Ohori registered her presence in Yonex Sunrise Malaysia Grand Prix Gold by remaining invincible in the qualifying round on Tuesday, April 30, 2013.
The Women’s Singles expert locked horns with a Korean campaigner Lee Jang Mi and their meeting prolonged to 39 minutes before ending with decisive figures of 21-15 and 21-19.
Aya Ohori, who was underrated earlier in this GP Gold event, elevated her status by sealing a straight-set victory in her last encounter of qualifying round.
On the other hand, Jang Mi looked completely out of touch as she displayed a below par performance and crashed out of this prestigious tournament in a woeful manner.
The battle heated up when Aya Ohori launched a brisk attack and confined her rival in the rear court. She did not show any mercy in next couple of rallies and doubled her total in no time.
At first, she mounted pressure by pocketing many back-to-back points and then make best out of her advantage to finish first half of the set with a favourable score position.
Aya Ohori placed a mountainous figure of 11 before interval and strengthened her grip over game.
Latter part of the game did not bring much for Jang Mi as she remained at the lower end until the final moments.
On the other hand, the Japanese player implemented an authoritative approach and swept the table with an impressive result of 21-15.
The second set of match proved a real test for both contenders as they made every effort to achieve their respective goals.
Aya Ohori was looking to wrap this showdown in just two games whereas the opposing shuttler was trying to avoid a straight-set defeat.
The game started with few consecutive gruelling rallies but neither of them could establish a clear lead.
Both female shuttlers remained close on points table until half time and resumed their campaigns after one-minute interval.
However, the second half of the set belonged to Japanese shuttler as she displayed superior finishing skills and locked the honour.
Aya Ohori registered a winning margin of 21-19 and reserved a main round berth in Malaysia Grand Prix Gold.
