2013 NBA All-Star Weekend set to be played in Houston – NBA Report
The Hilton America hotel in Houston will be the venue for All-Star weekend that is scheduled to take place in 2013. This was revealed by Terry Perry, who is currently working as the public relations manager of the hotel. However,
reports of this event are yet to be confirmed by the National Basketball Association.
The All-Star weekend is the biggest extravaganza of the entire NBA Season which features some of the best players from both the East and the West taking on each other in different competitions, the biggest being the All-Star game
which is held on Sundays.
On Fridays, there are three events: NBA All Star Weekend Celebrity game, Rookie game and D-League Dream Factory Friday Night. Celebrity game includes retired players of NBA and WNBA, musicians, actors and players of other games.
Rookie Challenge is played between a team comprised of Rookies (first year players) with a team consisted of sophomores (second year players).
Slam Dunk Contest involve youngest best dunkers in the league. This event has over years become one of the most followed and reached a new height when Blake dunked over a car to win it last year. The three Point Shootout is played
by the best three point shooters of league who have to shoot five basketballs from five different spots.
Last year, Los Angeles hosted the 2011 NBA All-Star Games at the coveted Staples Centre. Kobe Bryant and Blake Griffin were the biggest winners that time around.
In the All-Star game, the Western Conference defeated the star-studded East by 148-143 and Kobe Bryant won the Most Valuable Award (MVP). Griffin on the other hand, won the Slam Dunk Contest, in which he mesmerized all by jumping
over a car. In other competitions, the three point contest was won by Miami Heat small forward James Jones, who defeated Ray Allen of Boston Celtics, the league’s record holder for most three points made, by 20 points.
In the competition of the guards, it was the Golden State Warriors do-all guard Stephen Curry who bagged the Skills Challenge Competition. Atlanta won the Shooting Stars Contest while Justin Bieber brought the star touch to the
weekend by winning the MVP of NBA All-Star Celebrity Game.
Houston, the fourth largest city of America will host at the Toyota Center for the second time in seven years. At Astrodome, the city had hosted 1989 NBA All-Star game and then again in 2006.
Although Houston has got the go ahead to host the tournament, it is dubious whether any member from Houston Rockets will be selected for the Western Conference team or not. With the retirement of Yao Ming in July, an eight time
NBA All-Star, there is an absence of a super star in the team. The current roster does not have anyone to be an All-Star.
