2013 Swedish International: Selena Piek, Iris Tabeling become Women’s Doubles champion
Netherland’s spirited duo Selena Piek-Iris Tabeling amazed everyone with a stunning performance in the final round of Swedish International Stockholm and claimed the crown on January 20, 2013.
This Women’s Doubles title match put them against a local pair Emelie Lennartsson-Emma Wengberg and both teams entertained the crowd with a fine display of badminton craft. This 43-minute match ended with a decisive result of 21-15 and 21-16.
The Dutch female shuttlers gained an early advantage by winning first set and then capitalised this psychological edge to seal a splendid straight-set victory.
On the other hand, the native players put a decent show of skills but their fluctuated performance led them to a woeful defeat.
In the opening game, Selena and Iris unleashed a series of power packed strokes and confined the opposing team in the rear court.
They bagged many valuable points without any interruption and piled up a mountainous figure way before the mid-game break.
This initial lead proved a real boost for them as they did not give the Swedish team even a single chance to proceed on the points table.
Selena and Iris finished first half of the set with a respectable score position and maintained that upper hand also in latter part of the game.
Though, the twosome of Emelie and Emma made every effort to come out of their competitors’ influence but they could hit the mark.
They kept on trailing behind all the way to game point situation and this passiveness resulted in their 15-21 defeat.
The following game was not much different as the Dutch pair ruled the court in most part of the second set.
This time Selena and Iris were bit cautious in the beginning as they did not played with their full force and allowed the Swedish campaigners to stay close.
However, they gathered some pace immediately after the half time and made a notable difference on the points table.
They did not lose their grip at any stage of the game and registered a winning margin of 21-16. With this straight-set victory, they earned the right to raise Women’s Doubles trophy in 2013 Swedish International.
