2013 Swiss Open: Juliane Schenk secures a quarter-final berth in Women’s Singles event
Women’s Singles expert Juliane Schenk continued her successful run in the Swiss Open and thrashed Lydia Li Ya Cheah in pre quarter-final round on Thursday, March 14, 2013.
This 51-minutes tussle was staged at the local badminton arena of Basil and both contenders kept the audience intact while piling up decisive figures of 21-13, 13-21 and 21-13.
World Number four Juliane, who holds second spot in the tournament ranking, served notice of her supremacy in the opening and ending segments of the showdown.
Though, Lydia Cheah performed exceptionally well in the second set of the match but she could not repeat history in the final moments and crashed out of the event.
The battle heated up when the German campaigner unleashed a series of power packed strokes and pushed her rival on the back-foot.
Juliane did not make even a single mistake and finished the first half of the set with a respectable score. She capitalised this psychological edge in latter part of the game and managed to register an overwhelming margin of 21-13.
However, story was entirely different in the following game as the opposing shuttler showed a transformed character and turned her rival’s plan of a straight-set victory into dust.
This time Lydia Cheah employed interesting tactics and confounded Juliane Schenk with some amazing court craft.
She started the beating straight away in the establishing rallies and gained a decent advantage on the points table. She bagged many valuable points in a row and widened the gap before one-minute interval.
After the mid-game break, Lydia Cheah lost focus for a short span of time but then few back-to-back productive rallies reinstated her dominance. The Malaysian lady placed a winning total of 21-13 and setup a nerve-racking third set.
Unexpectedly, the decider proved a dead contest as Juliane Schenk employed all of her brilliance and experience in the game to seal a splendid win.
The German player raised her chances of success by ruling the court in first half of the set and then swept the table with an impressive result of 21-13.
This win took her to the quarter-finals where Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand will lock horns with her.
