2013 season: Two Europeans to keep an eye on
With the 2013 LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) season fast approaching, European contenders appear to have rolled up their sleeves as they vow to regain their lost charisma that once kept them in the headlines.
Top European players who are capable of giving a tough time to their American and Asian rivals can provide golf-crazy fans with a glimmer of hope that they can still outplay the best players both on the LPGA and LET (Ladies European Tour).
As the 2012 season is coming to a close, there is no question which LPGA stars have taken over the top positions. For fairly obvious reasons, the leaders are from Asian countries, as most of the South Korean contenders are now in a position to rule the headlines in most of the tournaments.
However, there are some European stars who cannot be ignored.
On top of the list is Suzann Pettersen of Norway, who has crafted a solid resume since turning professional in 2000. Pettersen rose to fame after her magical performance in the 2007 season as she won five LPGA tournaments.
Racking up five professional victories in a single season put Pettersen in the limelight and she positioned herself as a golfing icon for many.
In addition to proving her mettle on the LPGA Tour, the Norwegian star has also got her feet wet on the LET. Having grabbed five LET titles since she joined the Tour in 2001, the golfing sensation has always struck fear into her archrivals, but right now, she appears to be facing a performance slump as the 2012 season has not seen her show a solid performance.
Another fast-learning European contender is Spanish Azahara Munoz. Munoz has already put together quite an impressive profile getting ready for the 2013 season.
On the back of solid training and unmatched potential, the Spanish star has emerged as the most talented golfer in Europe.
The fame Munoz has achieved since turning pro in 2009 certainly warrants a surprise finish at almost any big event both on the LPGA and LET, as the star performer has shown in the recent past that fans can put their trust in her capabilities.
Munoz herself is confident about her skills and performance in the 2012 season, but is keen to point out that there is still a lot to be done.
“I feel great. So far it’s my best season and I’ve had a lot of top fives, top-10s and I got my first win, so I was really happy with that. It’s really hard to always keep playing really well. I play really well, then relax a little bit, then start playing really well again,” the Spanish prodigy recently said while taking to the LET.
“When I start playing bad, I had to do so many things on the LPGA, so many interviews and things”.
