2014 World Veterans Table Tennis Championship will be held in Auckland: Table Tennis News
The 2014 World Veterans Table Tennis Championship will be held at Auckland, New Zealand. The Mayor of Auckland, Len Brown, announced this news while addressing to the media on May 23.
This is a major achievement for the country to host an event one of the major table tennis event. This will also promote tourism and sports in the country.
This will be the first table tennis event to be staged at New Zealand. The event will be held in May 2014. This will be the second table tennis event in the Oceania region. A total of 2,000 participants are expected to feature in the five-day event from
over 50 nations.
The Mayor of Auckland said, "I congratulate Table Tennis New Zealand for securing the rights to host this fantastic sports event and the first of its kind to be held in New Zealand."
This will also give a boost to the Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development Agency. Table tennis is not amongst the most popular sports in the country and this event will play a key role to promote the sport in the region.
There would be another advantage for the country to host the event in May as it will increase the tourist activity. A turnover of US$2.3 million is expected for Auckland during the event.
The Mayor further said, "The event also represents an invaluable opportunity for the country to gain international media coverage, to highlight New Zealand as a wonderful destination to visit and compete, at the same time enjoying our warm hospitality. We
look forward to welcoming competitors, fans and associated partners to Auckland and hosting them here. To all those who have worked hard to bring about this successful result, I thank you.”
The mayor is looking forward for the detail plan of the event after winning the bid for the championship. The ATEED and the Table Tennis New Zealand will be working in collaboration to hold the event successfully.
This will be the first table tennis event in the country and the officials are hoping to make the 2014 World Veterans Table Tennis Championship a success story. Currently the Chinese are dominating the table tennis circuit and most of the tournaments are
held in the Asian and European region. It will also promote table tennis in the Oceania region.
