206 radio code entry is not going well can only put in numbers 1-6 is that normal?

radio code i have has 9's in it! got past error code 3 by powering down 4 a few hours, had 1 more go then it came up with error code four! is my girl friend doomed to listen to silence in the car or can this radio be sorted?

if it is a 4 diget number    hold down  1 until number comes up then 2 etc   finally when you have your code in   it will either lock stright in or you have to press 6 to unlock
