Question:

20th Wedding Anniversary coming up - what should we do?

My husband's last single sibling was married over the weekend. We were in the wedding party and he has commented over and over about how much fun we had.

Last night he brought up that our 20th anniversary is coming up in just over a year. He wants to have a huge celebration and renew our vows. What sounds like the most fun? A big party on the beach here (we live on the shores of Lake Michigan) or doing something like a cruise or Vegas?

  2. The big party at home sounds the most fun, and more people could attend. For a lot less than the price of a cruise or tickets to Vegas, your guests could come for a long weekend, and enjoy the lake. Have a two or three day long party, with people staying at local hotels, campgrounds or  vacation homes, and have several different mini-parties. Avoid all the headaches by hiring a planner and caterer or having most of the events done onsite at restaurants or golf clubs or something. No reason to do it all yourself.

We live in the Thumb, on Lake Huron, and have also considered a similar event. Renting a tent, and having  a daytime party with kids, a more formal evening event with renewal of vows, and a reception, and a casual breakfast on Sunday morning would be great. That way, you can invite everyone, and if you wanted to, limit the guest list to a more intimate group for the evening event, get really dressed up, and have an awesome time.

We are only on year 11, and have considered this, or a destination party in Florida. We have friends of many different income brackets, and family sizes, and having a more local (for most) event would allow everyone to attend. As guests to four destination weddings, I can say its a little pricey for the guests to fly, pay for lodging, food and entertainment for a week, especially in a choice location. (Three Vegas and one Orlando, and we skipped a friend's third wedding in Key West because of the expense. We paid more going to the wedding than he paid on the first two weddings, and it became sort of a sore point with several of the guests.)

On the other hand, if you want a place without kids, for a fun long weekend adults only, Vegas is always fun.

Its really up to you, and your values, your lifestyle, and your budget. Congrats on 20 years, and have a great time!

  3. If you are looking to have alot of people then go with the beach if you only want a small group then I'd suggest a cruise.

  4. while I was reading your question I said to myself go to Vegas and have a blast! So that was my first instinct, congrats and have the time of your life!!!
