Question:

22 action cleaning?

I have a Winchester Model 67-22 short long and long rifle. Made between 1934-1937 (no serial numbers but the fingergrooves on the forestock were only made between these years.)

I am wondering what is the best way to clean the action and chamber. Should I use dry graphite spray?

Should I wipe off the grease in the action?

  1. Older than my model for sure, but if you can use WD-40 (if you don't think it will hurt it, so don't use it if you are even .001% doubtful) and a paint brush to get the gunk out. Wipe out excess grease and WD (if you use it), but not all of it, so the action stays lubricated.

  2. use a spray solvent, brake cleaner works well, and then blow it out with compressed air after it sits awhile. then lightly coat with oil after the cleaner dissapates.

  3. You will probably want to use a rather strong bore solvent, Like Hoppes #9 bore solvent, and a cheap paint brush soaked with it to get all the nasty stuff like powder residue off. Wipe most of the grease off but leave a thin coat on. It protects against rust and keeps it lubed.
