well i have a gamo viper express airgun and an 8 ft. .625 magnum blowgun and i was wondering which is more powerful?all i know is that the gamo shoots 15.74 grain lead pointed pellets at 750 fps(really i chronoed it) and i want to know the velocity of the most powerful and or effective .625 magnum dart out of a .625 magnum 8 foot blowgun so essentially what i am asking is which is more powerful and or effective with the most powerful and or effective pellet or dart?

  1. well kevin has given you the formula to figure out power. as for effective depends what you are doing with it. i have a great uncle in his 90s that carries a sling shot in his back pocket for vermin control in his garden and he can reflex shoot it and hit a gopher in the head more effective than i could with any weapon.

  2. AM,

The way to figure it out is to check the kinetic energy of the projectile of each weapon and compare the two.

Kinetic energy or the energy of a moving object, is 1/2 x mass x velocity^2 = energy.

       Put another way,    energy = (.5) x mass x (velocity) x (velocity)

If you are simply comparing one weapon to the other, as long as all your units of measurement are the same from one to the other, it will work fine.   (grains vs grains for weight for example.  Don't mix grains for the bullet and pounds for the dart).  Technically speaking, it's best if you go metric, use all metric values, and if you are going with English values, make all of them english values.

For all practical purposes,  for just use mass and weight interchangeably.  A physics professor would eat me alive for saying that, but the difference is irrelevent for what you need to know here.

I know this isn't the final answer.  It would take time I don't have at the moment but it should get you started.
