Question:

220v Window AC unit won't run long enough to cool?

After a cleaning thinking that was the problem, this Kenmore unit fan will run, but the compressor (and the cooling from it) kicks on but doesn't stay on long enough to really cool. Right now it is set on 65 and the room is 80. Once in a while it will kick over, cool for a bit, then kick out and sit there. The coils were cleaned today with a foam spray and a garden hose. If you run the fan only (without trying to cool) the digital display will tell you the correct room temperature so I know the temp. probe is registering the room right. When it runs, it runs cold and drains a lot of water, but now that it got hotter outside it's just not working so well...

  1. It sounds like the unit is short of freon ! when trying to cool the coil is freezing up with ice, blocking air flow and shutting down thermostat cause it senses the cold. Then slowly defrost, make alot of water drain as it melts! After finally melting it goes back on until it freezes again(quickly at that). Needs to be charged with freon!

  2. This calls for a a/c repairman, you can't fix it yourself.

  3. Make sure you are not blocking any air flow with your curtains. If it is old the compressor may be  getting ready to go bad.  The compressor is getting hot and thermal over load relay is kicking off.
